Fields of Research

Our research delves into behaviors that most impact population health.

Researchers in the Department of Behavioral and Social Sciences conduct qualitative research, sophisticated quantitative modeling, laboratory-based experiments, and formative research with community partners to develop and test behavior change theories and to implement, evaluate and disseminate interventions that promote healthier behaviors.

Alcohol Use & Misuse

Conducting empirical research on alcohol use across the translational research spectrum.

Chronic Diseases Prevention and Management

Preventing and managing chronic diseases like HIV and diabetes.

Drug Use & Misuse

Examining multiple dimensions of drug use and misuse by employing a range of scientific methods.

Global Health

Seeking solutions for issues of urgent concern in low- and middle-income countries.

HIV, Sexually Transmitted Infections, and Reproductive Health

Developing HIV and STI-related research activities to understand and modify behaviors to advance health among myriad at-risk populations in resource-limited settings.

Health Disparities and Health Equity

Improving the health of underserved and diverse communities by understanding and eliminating inequities in health and health care outcomes.

Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Health

Conducting translational research to improve the health of all LGBT people.

Mindfulness

Performing high quality, methodologically rigorous research to investigate the impacts of mindfulness on health.
